Pat's King Of Steaks Adds A New And Expensive Topping

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A South Philadelphia steak shop has raised the bar on cheesesteaks by adding truffles to the mix.

Frank Olivieiri, owner of Pat's King of Steaks is holding a small hunk of the rare and extremely expensive white truffle from Alba, Italy and dropping shavings on top of a cheesesteak.

"The smell is just like, I don't know, it smells like heaven. Can you smell it? It's woodsy, earthy," he said.

Last Sunday, in a show of support for the National Italian American Foundation, Olivieri attended the Alba White Truffle Charity Auction, dropping 25 hundred bucks for a few pieces of the rare delicacy. It may seem like a strange idea to add an item that top chefs and well-heeled customers covet... to a sandwich of any kind, but Olivieiri says it works.

"I thought it'd be great if you could elevate a cheesesteak for a little bit and then bring it right back down to its humble roots as the staple in Philadelhpia cuisine. Bring it back to earth."

It's not cheap, one white truffle cheesesteak will set you back 20 bucks, but if you've got the pallet, and the wallet...

"I heard white truffles and I came running. Cause white truffle cheesesteak, how many times you have a chance to eat a white truffle cheesesteak. And I must say it's pretty darn good," one satisfied customer said.
