Does Stephen Hawking's Prediction About Mankind Strike A Chord?

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- When renowned Physicist Stephen Hawking spoke to students at the University of Cambridge this week, he encouraged them to look up at the stars and not down at your feet.

Good advice, considering he also said we likely won't survive another thousand years on planet earth.

"It's not surprising," said Mary Corcoran of Reading, Pennsylvania.

Stephen Hawking Says We've Got About 1,000 Years To Find A New Place To Live

David Fleming of Atlantic City, New Jersey added, "Unless we change our course, I think one-thousand years is probably generous.

"He's the smartest man on earth, so I take it very seriously," said Julian McCarthy of North Jersey.

According to British newspaper reports, Hawking went on to say we must continue to go into space for the future of humanity, describing our planet as "fragile."

In the past, Hawking has also spoken about the threat of autonomous weapons and artificial intelligence, something he says will be "either the best or the worst thing ever to happen to humanity."

So, what do regular folks think will do us in?

Sabrina Tillman-Boyd of Harrisburg said, "I think hatred toward each other."

Others said global warming, too much pollution and nuclear waste.

So, do you care what happens a millenium from now?

"I kind of care. I think it's kind of interesting," said Julian McCarthy.

David Fleming said "It's a lot of time."

"I think we should always care," added Sabrina Tillman-Boyd.

"If I didn't care, I really wouldn't be doing my part," said Mary Corcoran.
