New Uniforms Cause Health Concerns For American Airlines Flight Attendants

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- American Airlines is looking into health related issues with new uniforms.

Flight attendants are complaining of headaches and hives after wearing the new uniforms. One reason for the irritation may be the chemical formaldehyde which has been used in material worldwide for years, according to Mark Sunderland, Director of the Textile Material Technology Program at Philadelphia University.

"It gives it that crispness, that newness smell it also is a permanent press finish, whenever you see that finish on an apparel that says no ironing needed, you can probably be assured that there's some type of formaldehyde or resin finish that's on the fabric."

He said the chemical is also used in fertilizers and pesticides.
