Philadelphia To Get New Area Code

By Briana White

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Move over 2-1-5 and 2-6-7 – there's going to be a new area code in town!

According to a release published by The Pennsylvania Utility Commission (PUC) the supply of area codes servicing the Philadelphia area is expected to run out by 2019.  When that happens, an approved plan to overlay a new area code will go into effect for the service area.  It is unknown at this time what the third area code for the region will be but it has been more than 15 years since Philadelphia has seen a new area code.

2-6-7 was the last area code introduced to the region back in 1999, and before that 2-1-5 was the first code assigned to the Philadelphia service area back in 1947.

Philadelphia is not the only Pennsylvania County set to see a new area code.  The 7-1-7 area code used across 16 counties in Central Pennsylvania is quickly reaching its exhaust point.  By this time next year, new phone numbers in that region will be assigned a 2-2-3 area code.
