Can Wine Before Bed Help You Lose Weight?

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- We've all done it. Indulging in that soothing glass of wine just before bed, and then immediately regretting it fearing those added calories may have just settled into your waistline.

Well fear no more.

A new study conducted by Washington State University revealed that a glass of wine before bed could actually help you shed those extra pounds.

The culprit behind the weight loss claims – an antioxidant called resveratrol which researchers believe can actually prevent obesity.

The compound is commonly found in fruits like grapes, chocolate, and of course wine, and scientists believe that it can actually convert itself into a calorie-burning machine.

According to the study, researchers fed female adult mice a diet high in fat. Those who had resveratrol added to their diet were 40-percent less likely to gain weight.

But before you rush out to buy your favorite Merlot or that perfect Cabernet, there are some caveats.

While the mice used in the study reacted favorably to the resveratrol, the amount a human would need to produce favorable results would be much more than could actually be consumed in a normal diet.

It is also worth mentioning that certain wines only contain a portion of the resveratrol that you would find in grapes because many of the beneficial compounds get filtered out during the production process.
