PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The term metabolic syndrome has grown in popularity in recent years and it is one that doctors use to see if people are on the path to high blood pressure, diabetes and other heart risks. There is one thing that most people with metabolic syndrome seem to have in common —they carry too much weight.
According to a report in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, there is another common characteristic. People who drink too much alcohol have increased odds of developing metabolic syndrome.
The report defines excess drinking as more than two drinks per day for men or one drink for women. Binge drinkers are also considered to be at an increased risk.
Alcohol is often ignored when we talk about risk factors for heart disease and stroke, but it shouldn't be.
