Governor Wolf Signs Turnpike Tolls Cheats Legislation

HARRISBURG (CBS) -- Governor Wolf has signed into law a bill that will give the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission more tools to go after chronic toll evaders.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission says it is owed more than $670,000 dollars in tolls and fees by one New Jersey trucking firm alone. Turnpike spokesman Carl DeFebo says it's those kind of offenders for whom the new law, which takes effect next summer, is intended.

"This bill is really focused on these repeat violators. These are people who are intentionally trying to cheat the toll system."

The new law allows for the suspension of vehicle registration for repeat offenders and allows the Turnpike Commission to work with other tolling agencies to pursue out-of-state violators.

The new law also contains language that increases the penalties for accidents that result in serious injury or death in which distracted driving, such as texting, is involved on any Pennsylvania roadway
