Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival Begins Next Week
by Cherri Gregg
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The largest Asian American Film Festival on the East Coast kicks off next week here in Philadelphia.
The Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival features over 70 films telling the story of the diverse life and culture of Asian Americans living in America.
"We have filmmakers whose parents or grandparents may have come from another country, but they're for the most part American-born," says Rob Buscher, director of the festival.
He says the 10-day series of events will feature numerous food tastings and panel discussions featuring actors and directors that focus on key films.
On highlight is "Tyrus," a documentary about Tyrus Wong, a 106-year-old Chinese-American, who is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, yet has lived virtually unknown.
"He actually did the concept art for Bambi, the Disney Animation. And it's his water colors and unique brush style with influences from Chinese calligraphy that lends the film its style," says Buscher.
The Philadelphia Asian American Film Fest runs November 10th through 20th. Go to paaff.org for details.
