SEPTA Strike Prompts 'Pedal Power' In Center City

CENTER CITY (CBS) -- The SEPTA strike has spurred many to turn to 'pedal power' to get to work in Center City.

Aaron Ritz is a city transportation programs manager, he said the SEPTA walkout prompted many to resort to using a bicycle to get to work Tuesday.

Ritz said there was also a run on the city's Indego ride share bikes.

He said about a thousand of the rental bikes are in circulation.

Ritz said the city also put up additional bike racks.

"We added additional bike parking here at the Municipal Services Building which is just north of City Hall," Ritz said. "There's also a fair number of bike parking racks scattered throughout center city and the surrounding areas so parking, I know, is going to be at a premium at this time of year and certainly with the SEPTA strike."

Ritz reminded riders they are obligated to obey the rules of the road, just like any other motorized vehicle, and recommended wearing a helmet for safety.
