Dentists Issue Warning Regarding Do-It-Yourself Braces

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There is a new warning for parents and teens: leave dental care to the professionals; your dentist and orthodontist.

The warning stems from a frightening trend known as Do-It-Yourself braces. There are countless videos popping up online that are promising to help you fix your pearly whites while saving some green.

The videos say it can happen in just a few weeks. Some of the videos have racked up over 1 million views.

Orthodontist say the DIY braces will not fix your teeth and might even cause more damage. "I feel like after looking at this, I need to go do public service announcements," said Dr. Guy Deyton, an orthodontist.

"If you don't know how to move teeth, you could lost teeth," he added.

In addition to your teeth falling out, DIY braces can cause infections and, in some cases, disfigurement.
