Cheers! Week Of Events Celebrates Craft Spirits Made At Philly-Area Distilleries

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- With a boom of craft spirits distilleries popping in the region -- why not celebrate it? People are raising their glasses at Philly Craft Spirits Week running at various venues now through Friday, November 4.

The week of events will give the public a taste of the premium liquor that is being made right here in the Delaware Valley.

John Cooper of Dad's Hat Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey out of Bristol was handing out samples.

"We just got named 'Craft Whiskey of the Year' this past year," Cooper said. "We got three whiskeys rated over 90 points and we just introduced a 3-year-old straight rye in he last two weeks, and so far it's gotten glowing reviews."

Cooper, along with Dean Brown of Rowhouse Spirits in East Kensington, helped organize Philly Craft Spirits Week.

"You know one of the reasons why so many distilleries are opening up in Pennsylvania is just that they changed the laws in 2012 to make this a lot easier for us to do," Brown explained. "But I think people enjoy our spirits because we are doing something different, not just putting out another Tanqueray beef eater whatever gin. It's a lot more aromatic, a lot smoother easier to drink, plus very interesting products you really can't get anywhere else."
