Police Seek Suspects For Scamming Elderly NJ Woman Out Of $5,000

ABSECON, N.J., (CBS) -- Authorities in Absecon are looking for a man that they say ran a disturbing scam on Friday, October 21, which resulted in him getting away with thousands of dollars from an elderly woman.

Police say the man approached the woman in the Absecon Shoprite parking lot. He was wearing religious clothes and claimed to be a missionary from Africa, according to police.

Authorities say the man told the woman that he was doing charity work and had $35,000 on him that he had to give to charity. He showed the woman several large stacks of cash and told her that if she gave him $5,000, he would give her the $35,000 for her to donate to her church and keep some for herself.

She gave the man $5,000, before he told her that an additional $3,000 would also be needed. The woman retrieved the $3,000 from her bank and when she returned, the man had left with the $5,000 that she gave him.

Police describe the suspect as a black man, clean shaven and in his forties with a foreign accent.

Authorities say a second man was also involved. One of the suspects was caught on surveillance camera at the Shoprite.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Absecon Police at 609-641-0667.
