More Supermarkets Across Pennsylvania Uncork Wine-To-Go Sales

KING OF PRUSSIA (CBS) -- One of the first supermarkets to toast the start of wine-to-go sales in Pennsylvania is popping the corks for another at the Wegmans in King of Prussia.

After Governor Tom Wolf signed Act 39 in June, opening up wine sales for establishments with restaurant licenses, Wegmans applied for wine permits at all 17 of its stores in Pennsylvania. A few days ago, a room filled with tables and chairs for overflow restaurant seating at the King of Prussia Wegmans was converted, and it's now stacked with wine bottles, according to store manager Kevin Lang.

"We have about 100 different types of wine," Lang said. "We're very excited to offer such a wide selection."

Some early adopter shoppers, like Paula were delighted for the sheer convenience factor.

"It means that I have one less errand to run," she said. "I can one stop, shop and grab a bottle of wine, while I'm picking up dinner."

Another shopper, Richard, was price conscious.

"Competition breeds better pricing," he said. "I'm hoping that i may enjoy lower prices."

The only caveat is that consumers are limited to four bottles per visit, and must pay at the same cash register at which beer sales are made.

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board received more than 320 applications and, so far, 245 permits have been issued, mostly to supermarkets, like ACME, Giant, Fresh Grocer, ShopRite and Whole Foods.
