Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions: Toomey 'One Of The Absolute Best Senators'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions voiced his support for Pat Toomey in his bid for re-election to the US Senate from Pennsylvania, saying he would play a key role in replacing the Affordable Care Act should Donald Trump be elected to the White House.

Sessions told Rich Zeoli on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT that Toomey is an essential member of the Republican caucus.

"Pat Toomey is one of the absolute best Senators in the United States Senate. He is an invaluable member. He is so smart. He works so hard. He understands the real world of politics and how to get things done, well respected. He's very knowledgeable about healthcare. More knowledgable than I am on the details of it. But we all know the kind of thing that's got to be done to move healthcare in the direction that really benefits the most people. Pennsylvania is both critical and can likely decide the next President of the United States. Pat Toomey could also be the man who gives Republicans the majority, so we can fix Obamacare and a lot of other things."

He also stated the key to a successful Republican effort to replace Obamacare will be coming up with a solution to pre-existing conditions.

"A number of things Republicans have always said that we believe ought to be in a system and we can and have got to work out a way to do something about the pre-existing illnesses. That's a challenge. That's an expensive proposition. But you just got to be able to deal with people who have serious illnesses and didn't have coverage before. It's not going to be easy, but we can do that, and that would be part of the plan too."

Toomey is currently in a tight race with his Democratic challenger, Katie McGinty, that polls show moving back and forth with no clear leader.
