Rittenhouse Square Shooting Prompts Public Safety Meeting

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A man was shot multiple times in Rittenhouse Square last week after trying to stop a robbery. Now the community and Philadelphia city officials are working together to make sure the park stays crime free.

Dozens gathered Monday evening for a public safety meeting at a church across the street from where the shooting happened.

Councilman Kenyatta Johnson addressed the group, outlining efforts to help improve the neighborhood.

"We are creating a task force on public safety and homelessness for Rittenhouse Square," Johnson said.

Police commissioner Richard Ross also joined the conversation. He says his officers are doing their part to keep the park user-friendly.

"We've already started in terms of increased patrol in the area, just to make sure that people don't have to contend with quality of life issues that no one in the city wants to deal with," Ross said.

More than a half-dozen community groups came out to the meeting to give input on what they think can be done to keep their neighborhood safe.
