Nittany Lion Aims For First Place In UCA Mascot Competition

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Last year, the Penn State Nittany Lion finished in 12th place. This year, the Nittany Lion is aiming for first place in the Universal Cheerleading Association Mascot Video Competition.

Mascots from around the top universities in the country must impress the judges with a two-minute video encompassing everything the mascot does.

"The Nittany Lion is a physically demanding position," said Cheerleading coach Curtis White via collegian.psu.edu. "Some physical demands are obvious — the many one arm push ups that are performed and the tumbling — but some demands that are not so obvious. The long days that often include several events, the suit that traps a ton of heat and the high energy level the mascot must display at all times. In any given year the mascot can be at over 300 events."

The Nittany Lion performs in front of 100,000-plus people during Penn State football games at Beaver Stadium. He should be able to handle a little two-minute video.
