Authorities Investigate After Flags Hung To Honor Police, Firefighters Burned

LOWER PROVIDENCE Twp., N.J. (CBS) -- Lower Providence Township is a community where support for police is conspicuous. Signs dot yards and others perch in front of local businesses.

And on the banister of one home's porch, once flew two American flags, one adorned with a blue line and the other red.

"They are the thin blue line and the thin red line in support of our local police and fire departments," the homeowner said. Now, they are simply melted masses, destroyed early Tuesday morning by an unknown arsonist.

Lower Providence Police are investigating and say whoever is responsible, lit the flags on fire between 1:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.

Marla, who lives in the home and doesn't want to give her last name, says she hopes the cameras outside caught those responsible. "I was at first really angry and then I became really sad because I have a child. I have a dog. If this had gone any further than the flags, onto the poles or the deck, we could have been stuck in a burning house and potentially died."

She has a message for the suspect behind the vandalism. "I'm not taking them down and I'm going to replace them, so you can keep burning them, but they're going to keep coming back.
