Maple Leafs Rookie Auston Matthews Scores 4 Goals In NHL Debut

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The sports world was introduced to Auston Matthews last night in a record-breaking way.

Matthews, 19, became the first player ever to score four goals in his NHL debut. The 6’3″, 216-pound forward was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 entry draft of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Amazingly, Matthews and the Maple Leafs still lost the the game to the Ottawa Senators 5-4 in overtime. Here’s the reaction from Matthews’ mom after her son’s third goal.

Current and former NHL players reacted to Matthews’ historic debut on Twitter.
