Halloween Store Says Sales Of Clown Costumes Up Over 200 Percent

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Clowns have dominated the news for weeks and that has only intensified as we approach Halloween.

There has always been a population of people that are afraid of clowns, and that number has grown with the wave of clown threats that have gone on around the country, leaving some hurt and several others arrested.

The spike in attention for clowns has also led to an increased interest in clown Halloween apparel.

Retailer Halloween Express provided some of its data to Eyewitness News concerning buyers' interest in clown costumes and masks.

The company shared updated data (as of October 11) on clown merchandise (masks and costumes) with us.

According to Halloween Express, their clown sales online are up 239 percent from 2015.

Of the top 25 selling clown items, 17 of them are of the scary, or evil variety. That number was at 13 a year ago.

There is a particular mask in the company's collection that is outselling all the rest and is a 3:1 favorite over the next closest seller.

The whole "scary clown" phenomenon seems to be boosting sales.
