Boomer Esiason Raves About The Birds

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If anyone would be objective about the Eagles, it would be Boomer Esiason.

The former four-time Pro Bowl quarterback played for Bengals, Jets, and Cardinals and now works on CBS Sports Radio's WFAN in New York. Esiason has no ties to Philadelphia, but he raved about the Birds on Thursday's 94WIP Mike & Ike Show.

Esiason says he would put the Eagles right there with the Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings, and the Seattle Seahawks as the best four teams in the NFL.

"Philadelphia is right there with them, that's how good their defense has been...look they're scoring 30 points a game. That's second in the NFL. They have a plus-six turnover ratio, so that means they're protecting the ball which we all know they are. And they're getting the ball via turnovers. They've won their first three games by a score count of 92 to 27. You take a look at how many passes Carson Wentz has completed. The fact that they can run the ball, the fact that they have two different style running games and running back. The fact that a defense that is assaulting people and they have maybe the best defensive lineman in football in Fletcher Cox. So, right now -- I can't believe I'm even saying this -- but it's a very rosey time for the Philadelphia Eagles football team and their fans because this a pretty damn complete football team and it will show itself again this Sunday against Detroit."

With a rookie quarterback in Carson Wentz and a rookie coach in Doug Pederson, no one expected this kind of start from the Eagles.

"I would say that the Eagles have to be the biggest surprise in the NFL bar none," Esiason said. "I mean they're 3-0, they have a rookie quarterback who hasn't turned the football over -- he's been better than advertised. He's far outkicked whatever we thought he was going to do this year. And this defense has really come on."
