Deal Allowing Uber, Lyft To Operate Legally In Philly Expires Soon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The temporary deal allowing rideshare services Uber and Lyft to operate legally in Philadelphia expires at midnight Friday night.

The Parking Authority's three-month hold on enforcement against Uber runs out at the end of the month. After that, UberX and Lyft technically go back to being illegal, since the legislature has been unable to pass a bill regulating them.

Lawmakers don't return to Harrisburg until October 17. Parking Authority spokesman Marty O'Rourke says without a deal, look for resumed enforcement this weekend:

"If the law expires without any renewal from Harrisburg then it will be illegal and the PPA will be enforcing it."

Lyft has said it will continue to operate on Saturday. Uber is expected to make a statement on Thursday.

Philadelphia cab drivers, though, are not happy at driving on what they believe is an uneven playing field.

"This Friday, it's going to be chaos in the streets when they become illegal again," Taxi Workers Alliance head Ronald Blount said on Tuesday.
