The End Of An Era: BlackBerry To Stop Making Phones

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The device that started our smartphone obsession is no more: BlackBerry has decided to stop making its own phones, in favor of farming out the manufacture to an Indonesian company.

The surprise for many of you will be that BlackBerry is still even a 'thing.' But for a loyal few, it's the end of an era.

"I get about 50, 100 emails everyday."

Imagine being able to receive and respond to those messages from your phone! (That was a big deal in the early 2000s.)

"Everybody who was anybody, or thought so, had to have one to keep in touch."

So addictive, the handheld with keyboard was nicknamed the CrackBerry.

"Wooo! Love it, love it, love it!"

Oprah named it one of her favorite things. Millions bought in.

But then..."Today, Apple is going to reinvent the phone."

"More enterprise users are buying based on applications."

"Apple and the Android camps have the momentum in smartphones."

"As its device sales continue to fall..." "BlackBerry says it will buy a user's iPhone for as much as $550."

BlackBerry never could compete against sleek touchscreens or in the critical app economy. Despite high-profile holdouts like President Obama.

"It turns into a car if I have to make a quick getaway."

And Kim Kardashian, "People are horrified that I have a BlackBerry, and I don't understand that reaction."

BlackBerry now holds 0.1 percent of smartphone marketshare.

Recently, the company released Android-based phones it touts as more secure. The CEO has been trying to shift BlackBerry's focus to software development.
