Children Seriously Wounded In Violent Rampage In Cobbs Creek

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Authorities say a man was shot by Philadelphia Police on Wednesday night following alleged stabbings.

The incident took place around 7:00 p.m. in the city's Cobbs Creek section.

Police say a man stabbed two juveniles inside a home on the 6200 block of Hazel Avenue in West Philadelphia.

Commissioner Richard Ross said police initially received a call stating that people had been shot.

Authorities arrived at the home and found an 8-year-old with significant wounds to the throat and abdomen, according to police. They add that a 13-year-old was found with injuries as well.

Authorities say the man fled and that both juveniles were taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to be treated.

There, it was determined that the children were not shot, but stabbed. Both are listed in critical condition.

Commissioner Ross said that police received information that the person responsible was the father of the 8-year-old. He added that they believe the man was in his 30's.

Officials say some time later, police fired on a man who is believed to be involved in the stabbing. He was shot on the 700 block of Cobbs Creek Parkway near Webster Street.

Commissioner Ross explained that the man was confronted by police and appeared to have his hand in his pocket.

"They tell him several times to take his hand out," Ross said of the officers. "He abruptly takes his hand out and they fire multiple times striking him."

The man was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital for treatment and was pronounced dead.

Officials say that a 70-year-old woman, in the same home where the stabbing took place, was slashed in the face. They add that a 42-year-old woman was struck as well.

"What we have right now is a male who was on a bit of a rampage," Ross said. He went on to explain that a 15-year-old believed to be the daughter of the man, was also assaulted.

Ross added that the daughter told authorities she believed the man might have been high on drugs.

Police searched the area for a gun and did not locate one. They said they found multiple knives.

Commissioner Ross explained that officers believed they saw a gun during the confrontation with the man.

Authorities say six to nine officers fired their weapons at the man.
