'Let Us Lead The Nation': Wolf Addresses Joint Session On PA Opioid Crisis

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- Governor Wolf made a rare appearance before the state legislature today to urge passage of legislation to combat the opioid addiction crisis in Pennsylvania.

It is highly unusual for a Pennsylvania governor to address a joint session of the state legislature, other than the budget address every year.

Governor Wolf is calling on lawmakers to take a series of actions, including limiting the amount of opioids a patient can receive at emergency rooms to a seven day supply without refills.

"And we should put the same restriction in place for minors no matter where they get a prescription. We've all heard too many horror stories about high school athletes whose futures are robbed by addiction that begins with prescription pain killers."

A bill limiting opioid prescriptions for minors passed the Senate and went to the House just before the governor's speech on Wednesday. But the sponsor of that bill cautions that no one bill will solve the problem, and that there are no overnight solutions.
