Peter King: 'Eagles Are Legitimate Deep-Into-January Contenders'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- When the fans and local media say it, it's one thing. But when Peter King -- one of the NFL's best national analysts -- writes it for Monday Morning Quarterbackit tends to carry some more weight.

The 3-0 Eagles are contenders, according to King.

"It shouldn't be happening this fast for the Eagles, coming up from 7-9 with a rookie head coach and a rookie quarterback from North Dakota State and a defense that needed a new leader," King wrote on Monday. "But it is, and there's nothing fluky about it. The Eagles are legitimate deep-into-January contenders right now."

The 2017 Super Bowl is on February 5th, so by saying "deep-into-January" King isn't necessarily getting crazy with Super Bowl expectations. But late January could mean a shot at playing in the NFC Championship for a chance to play in the Super Bowl.

On the other hand, it's only three games and the Eagles are just one game ahead of the New York Giants (2-1) and Dallas Cowboys (2-1) and have yet to play a divisional game.

The Eagles went through a tumultuous string of events to get to this point: firing Chip Kelly, hiring Doug Pederson, re-signing Sam Bradford, trading up twice in the draft, selecting Carson Wentz with the second overall pick, naming Bradford the starter, trading Bradford to the Vikings, naming Wentz the starter, and winning the first three games of the season with a rookie quarterback while not committing a single turnover and leading the NFL in point differential at +65.

After a 34-3 beat down of the Steelers on Sunday, the Eagles feel real. Wentz has become the first quarterback to throw 102 passes to start his career without an interception and one of only two quarterbacks to win his team's first three starts as a rookie.

Amazingly, Bradford and the Vikings are coming off an impressive win over their own: 22-10 over the Carolina Panthers. They're 3-0 too and will come to Philly for a showdown at the Linc in Week 7 (Sunday, October 23rd).
