PA State Schools Union Sets Strike Date Amid Contract Talks

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - The union representing professors and other staff at State Schools -- including West Chester University and Cheney University -- has announced a strike date.

Faculty members will go on strike on October 19th if no new contract is met before then. That's from the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties.

President Kenneth Mash says a strike is their last resort:

"We have been subjected to a very painful process. We have spent too much time for all the faculty across the system on these issues."

Those issues include pay cuts and proposals from the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education which the union says would result in fewer full-time professors.

The State System says it is offering faculty raises, but adds cost cutting is necessary to ensure the financial sustainability of the system.
