PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Officials at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia say four heart patients contracted infection.
They say the infections were contracted from a specific mission that helps to support the heart and lungs during major surgeries.
Penn officials say the equipment has been removed. They add that the risk to other patients is minimal.
Any other patients, who may have been impacted by the equipment, are being contacted by the medical center.
The state health department is aware of 21 cases of these bacterial infections in three hospitals.
