Expansion Project Underway At Main Line's Suburban Square

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- A $20-million expansion project is underway at Suburban Square in Ardmore, Pennsylvania.

Construction is expected to begin next week on a new parking garage between Urban Outfitters and the Apple store. Kimco Realty's Nina Rogers says the 625 space garage will triple the current parking options.

"It's been a request that customers have had for many years in terms of having more parking options available at The Square," Rogers said. "So we're excited to be able to offer that."

Construction has already begun on a 4,000 square foot expansion of Trader Joe's. And, Rogers says, once the parking garage is done, they'll start the next project which will be retail and office space on the train station parking lot, connecting the shops along Coulter Avenue.

"Connecting it really will serve as a Main Street on the Main Line," she said, "and we're excited about that."

And Rogers says, even though the shopping center is nearly 90 years old, it still fits the design model of modern shopping centers.

"They sort of look to create what's already been here organically at Suburban Square,"  she said. "So they looked for transit oriented development, and we have all of that here."

As for a replacement for Macy's, which closed in March, Rogers says they hope to make an announcement by the end of the year.
