Residents Start Pressuring Township After Iron Deposits Were Found In Maple Shade Water

NEW JERSEY (CBS) -- Maple Shade Township council is considering how to address brown water coming from residential faucets. But one local resident said she has information that shows it's more than just dirty water.

Maple Shade Township said the discolored water is caused by iron in the water lines and has only been happening for a few months. But resident Anne Flynn said she's noticed it for five to six years. And it could be a health issue.

"I've read several sources where the excess iron can cause increased pain from authorities, it can cause diabetes, it can cause Alzheimer's, there's quite a long list of things that excess iron can cause."

And she claims some water samples contain '1-2-3 T-C-P,' or 'Trichloropropane.' The EPA has classified it as a 'likely carcinogen.' But the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection said the level of TCP in the water is .03 parts per billion. The acceptable level under federal guidelines is one part per billion.
