Tips For How To Ride Out Hurricane Hermine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- With the approach of Hurricane Hermine, AAA Mid-Atlantic has some tips for staying safe this weekend.

AAA's Jana Tidwell said no matter where you'll be this weekend, it's smart to take the nasty effects of the storm seriously.

"Strong hurricanes, tropical storms, can bring heavy rains and heavy winds very quickly, leading to road flooding, which is extremely dangerous if you're trying to maneuver a vehicle on the road," Tidwell said.

She said even small amounts of water on the road can be dangerous, and even deadly.

"Just six inches of water moving quickly across the roadway can knock a person off their feet if they try to get out of a car."

And 18-inches of moving water can float and carry away a vehicle.

AAA recommends you have a full tank of gas, and pack some emergency supplies, like a change of clothes.

"Some bottled water, snacks, rain ponchos, things you'll need if you're stuck."

Tidwell said that's something no one plans to do, but it should be planned for just in case.
