Officials Urge Fathers To Walk Their Kids To School

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The first day of class for Philadelphia public school students, next Wednesday, will also be the ninth year for the "Million Father March."

City and school officials urge fathers to walk their children to school.

Councilman Curtis Jones says the first day of school sets the tone for the whole year so it's important that fathers be involved.

"It sends a signal to their child that school is important. It sends a signal to the community that we're going to keep them safe."

The march is a national effort, involving 800 cities, but local organizer David Fattah of the House of Umoja is proud of Philadelphia's effort.

"When we first started this, we were trying to stop persistently dangerous schools. For the third time, I can report to you there are no schools listed as persistently dangerous."

Men who aren't dads can march in solidarity a few blocks, from the House of Umoja on Master Street to Bluford Elementary.
