Police: Man Who Stole From Church Could Be Behind 6 Other Burglaries

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police believe the man who stole donation boxes from a Northeast Philadelphia Church is behind other burglaries that have taken place at several restaurants and another church in the area.

The suspect was caught on surveillance video smashing a stained glass window and breaking into Our Lady of Calvary Church on the 11000 block of Knights Road back on August 21. Once inside he can be seen prying a donation box off the wall.

According to officials, the suspect left with the box and took an undisclosed amount of money from another before fleeing the church in an unknown direction. In the video, police point out that the suspect's left hand is bandaged, he's wearing a brace on his right arm and another bandage on his leg.

Now authorities are saying that same man is responsible for a string of six other robberies that took place between August 14 and August 29.

They say he may have stolen the money from candle boxes located on either side of the altar at Maternity BVM Church on Old Bustleton Avenue on August 14.

Police believe he also stole from several restaurants including Bellissimo's Pizza and Supreme Pizza both on Castor Avenue, Cafe Italiano on Cottman Avenue and the KFC on Frankford Avenue.

Many of the establishments had either a glass door or a window smashed in where the suspect gained entry.

Anyone who recognizes the man in the video or has any information about the crime is being asked to call police at 215-686-3153.
