New Jersey Farmers, Campbell's Soup Join Forces For Good Cause

by Justin Udo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- New Jersey farmers team up with the Campbell Soup Company to raise money for a good cause.

For the last five years Campbell's Just Peachy Salsa has flooded South Jersey supermarket shelves at the end of the summer.

The peaches in that salsa come from New Jersey farmers who cannot use them as part of the crop they sell.

"Slightly undersized, maybe they have a slight blemish. They're completely nutritionally sound," said Amanda Bauman with Campbell.

She says many of these peaches would end up in a landfill and cost the farmers thousands of dollars to get rid of.

Instead, they are sent to the Food Bank of South Jersey, who in turn gives their surplus to Campbell.

"We try to take this surplus and then we manufacture it into a shelf peach salsa," said Dr. Lewis Eugenio with Summit City farms, one of the companies that donates their peaches.

He says he's happy he can cut down on waste and support a good cause.

"We in America, I think, need to be more appreciative of all the waste that we have, not only in the fruit industry, but in so many industries and food-related sources," said Dr. Eugenio.

Since 2012, sales of Just Peachy salsa have grossed more than $300,000 in revenue, with proceeds going to the Food Bank of South Jersey.
