Cops Welcome Back Students At North Phila. Elementary School

By Tim Jimenez

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's the first day of the school year at a North Philadelphia elementary school and special guests welcomed the students back with open arms.

It's part of the school's efforts to bring police and the community together.

"Oh my goodness, we are so excited to have the kids back!" says Assistant Principal Jinnely Davidson.

Summer's over, and the school year begins at Frederick Douglass Mastery Elementary.

Greeting the arriving students and their families, three 22nd district Philadelphia police officers.

Davidson says their involvement means a lot.

"It's no secret that we need to bridge the gap between the officers and the community, and we need the students to see that officers are humans and they care about them, so when they come into the community they're not feared."

Ten-year-old, fifth grader Salimah says it's good to see first-hand that cops do care.

"Some officers are not that nice, so it's pretty nice for them to come to our school and give us high fives and cheer for us."

Earlier in the month, the school hosted a forum on police shootings and school officials want to keep the conversation going.
