Police Searching For Suspect In Burlington Shooting

by Trang Do

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police in Burlington, NJ are asking for the public's help to locate a murder suspect.

Samuel James, 26, of Burlington Township, is charged with murder in the shooting death of 24-year-old Byron Turner.

It happened just before 7 p.m. Saturday outside of Turner's home on the 100 block of East Federal Street.

Sunday, members of Turner's family passed out purple balloons and comforted one another in his Yorkshire neighborhood.

"We have to deal with the loss of my nephew, my sister's son, but at the same time, we're dealing with the loss of our community," said Deborah Turner, Byron's aunt. "Because I was born and raised in this community and this is not where I came from."

The shooting happened while children played in a grassy area nearby. A five-year-old girl was hurt as she ran away from the gunfire.

"This is a very dangerous individual. The way that this crime occurred was very dangerous and very heinous," said Capt. John Fine of the Burlington City Police Department. "It could have hurt a lot more people."

Family members said Turner, a father of two, was not the intended target. His aunt hopes the tragedy can serve as a wake-up call to the community.

"We need to take our community back. It starts with the parents of these children," Deborah Turner said. "If your children are lost to this community, you need to take your children back. They are your children."

Samuel James is considered armed and dangerous. He is known to frequent Burlington and Camden.

If you see him, you are asked to contact Burlington City Police immediately at (609) 386-0262, or Burlington County Central Communications at (609) 267-8300.
