PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Almost anything can be repurposed. KYW's Jay Lloyd stopped for a nosh and a beer at a 1920's Coast Guard Lightship that is now a beacon on the New York City restaurant scene.
It's called the Frying Pan - an appropriate name for a restaurant. But it wasn't always. Occupying a waterfront berth on the scenic Hudson River in the heart of Chelsea, the bright red hull is the salvaged Frying Pan Shoal Lightship. It once guided ships around the dangerous shoal of the same name off Cape Fear in the Carolinas.
Tied to an old railroad barge it boasts a lively bar, outdoor seating with spectacular views of river traffic, and food perfect for lunch, dinner or happy hour - don't miss the crab cakes and shrimp boil. New Yorkers and visitors find it a relaxing spot to wind down at day's end.
"It's just a great way to enjoy a day like this," said one New York resident.
Sunny, mid-eighties and boasting a gentle river breeze. It's at 24th street in Hudson River Park, just a few blocks from Chelsea Piers.
By the way, Lightships have long been replaced by electronics.
