Correctional Officer Arrested For Allegedly Stealing Inmate's Money

GLEN MILLS, Pa. (CBS) -- Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan announced the arrest of a correctional officer for allegedly stealing money from an inmate.

The officer, Daniel McEnhill was a correctional officer at the George W. Hill Correctional Facility and on Thursday, he was charged with unlawful taking.

Officials say that an inmate filed a grievance against McEnhill, 33, claiming that when when going through the intake process, he never received a receipt from McEnhill for $108 in cash that was taken from him.

Authorities say that surveillance footage of the exchange, which took place on June 3, was reviewed. They say that it shows McEnhill take the money from the inmate, count it and put it in an envelope before putting it away in his pant pocket.

McEnhill gave a statement to investigators in which he claimed he found the money in the inmates underwear, placed it in the envelope and passed it along to officers on the next shift, according to authorities. They add that McEnhill was then shown the surveillance video.

Police say their investigation determined that McEnhill kept the money.

"The actions of Daniel McEnhill are a violation of the public's trust and undermine the credibility of the criminal justice process," said Whelan. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 25.
