Bucks County DA Announces Retirement

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (CBS) - After nearly seven years as the top law enforcement officer in Bucks County, district attorney David Heckler is announcing his retirement.

Heckler says he's notified the president judge of Bucks County that he will be leaving office on September 2nd.

"I am not doing this because of any medical exigencies," Heckler said.

He spent most of his 45 minutes before the microphones Thursday praising his staff, and while he stressed his successor will be up to the board of judges in Bucks County, he did say having a successor in the office was always important, and that's been chief of prosecution Matt Weintraub:

"He has served in that capacity admirably."

Heckler adds he's been lucky since day one on the job as DA, surrounded by a great staff:

"You can go like 15 deep in our line-up and you've still got somebeody who's not going to drop the ball, who's not going to screw up the case, who's not going to make a rookie mistake ever."

1st Assistant District Attorney Michelle Henry calls it a very sad day, adding it's been an honor to work with Heckler:

"Always driven by his commitment to do the right things for the right reasons."

Heckler was a judge, but left the bench in 2008 to run for DA.

He says he looks forward to repairing a stable of old cars he's acquired over the years.
