Trump Co-Chair: 'Stick To The Message'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Sam Clovis, a Co-Chairman of Donald Trump's campaign for President, said the candidate will remain focused on defeating Hillary Clinton in November to win the White House.

Clovis, who spoke with Rich Zeoli on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, stated that Trump will adhere to the core tenets his run is centered on.

"Stick to the message and the message is the economy. The message is national security. The message is protecting this country and that's the message we're going to stick to. I think Mr Trump will do that and I think as we get more and more down the road here, as we get closer and closer, we go through the debate process, we're going to see a clear choice. This is what we have been asking for all along is that we are able to make a clear distinction between Mr Trump and Mrs Clinton and, on that point, a clear distinction between our policies and ask the question that Ronald Reagan asked in 1980, are you better off today than you were eight years ago? The [answer] will be, no, you're not. Do you want to continue down that path? The answer will be, no, we don't. The clear choice is Donald Trump."

He believes Trump's message specifically resonates with voters in Pennsylvania.

"We ought to focus on the economy. I think that's certainly one of the big issues. Trade has effected Pennsylvania dramatically. I think that's another issue that we're looking at, certainly, to get a better deal for America in every aspect of our lives. I think our key on the economic side is tax reform. I think this is a huge issue. There are parts of Pennsylvania that, the coal industry, has been effected and will be effected by EPA rules. I think we're going to see a rollback on some of the regulations to allow businesses to make adjustments and do well. Our corporate tax reforms are going to be very important to us as we go forward."

Clovis downplayed recent polling that shows Trump trailing Clinton significantly, saying there is still a lot of time left to win over voters.

"I think the debates are going to have a huge weight in this election, particularly as things tighten up. I think we'll see a lot of back and forth in the polls because I really don't think that, right now, the polls really reflect a true sense of who's going to vote or not vote, and I think this is true of both sides, not just on our side, certainly on the Republican side, but I think on the Democratic side as well. I think we've still got a lot of things up in the air."
