Kids In Summer Program Question Mayor Kenney On Topics From Gun Violence To His Favorite Movie

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Kids at a Philadelphia summer program had the rare opportunity to question a special guest this morning.

The Guardian Civic League's summer enrichment program keeps 35 kids sharp for school, says director Cheryl McClendon.

"Keeping their brains stimulated helps them to be able to return in September without having lost as much."

On this day, the stimulation was provided by Mayor Kenney, who answered the kids' questions on curbing gun violence.

"How are you going to stop the killing with guns?"

"You know what? Every day I think about this. And every time a young person gets shot in the street, it just really does make me sad and makes me cry."

To lighter questions, like what's his favorite baseball team?

"The Phillies. Who else? You think I like the Mets?"

The kids also learned the mayor lives in an apartment, not a mansion. He's met President Obama three times, and among his favorite movies is "The Bodyguard."
