Study Finds 'Boring' Bedding Is Best For Babies To Prevent SIDS

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A new study suggests that boring bedding is the best option for protecting newborns against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

According to the CDC, in 2014 approximately 1,500 babies died of SIDS which is the leading cause of death in infants one to 12 months old.

Researchers from the American Academy of Pediatrics used video to observe more than 150 infants inside of their homes. They found that most parents placed the infants in environments with risk factors for sleep-related infant deaths such as placing the child on their side or on a soft surface.

The AAP recommends parents use plain bedding -- meaning they should avoid putting blankets, stuffed animals, bumper pads and other objects in the crib to help minimize the risk of unexplained infant deaths. The recommendation was first made in 1992.
