Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Lobster Shack

By Jay Lloyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Downscale dining can be an unexpected treat if your summer getaway takes you to the coastal northeast. KYW's Jay Lloyd explains.

The idea of dining at a clapboard shack doesn't sound very appetizing unless, of course, it's on the New England coast or the Canadian Maritimes. Here, the lobster and clam shacks are the great levelers.

Visitors and locals arrive by limo and pickup. They mingle for some of America's freshest and tastiest fin and shell food.

"I had a nice fisherman's platter last night. I had giant shrimp, two pieces of halibut, scallops, and a big pile of seasoned fries," said one visitor.

Here in the New London, Connecticut area whole lobster as large as 10 pounds, famous New England lobster rolls, clam strips, raw and fried oysters, and those fresh raw clams are the draw.

The shacks that dot the coast are known for water views, outdoor picnic benches and food as fresh as the salt air. To find them, just ask a local. Our go-to shacks here were Abbott's Lobster in the Rough and Costello's Clam Shack.
