Get Ready For A Lot More Ads In Your Newsfeed

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Facebook is joining the ranks of a growing list of online platforms and publishers like the New York Times and Forbes that have launched efforts to fight ad-blocking on their sites.

Facebook has found a way to block the ad blockers.

In a blog post, the social network says it will change the way advertising is loaded into its desktop website to make its ad unit more difficult for ad blockers to detect.

Matthew Ray, the cofounder of Chatterblast Media, says the move is going to help businesses who advertise on Facebook.

"I think the more control Facebook takes over your ad experience it will also help organizations with their organic reach," Ray said. If organizations are publishing content that is interesting, accurate, authentic about themselves and their businesses that's still going to automatically go viral"

Facebook is also rolling out new ways for users to control the types of ads they are served, so if they don't want to see ads about a certain interest, like travel or cats, they can remove the interest from your ad preferences.

"Look at the Super Bowl. We will consume hours of ads if they're well done," Ray said. "So every business, small or large, should not be looking at the frequency or the reach, they should really be looking at the creativity and the engagement of their ads so people don't want to use ad blockers"

The move is perhaps the strongest anti-ad blocking measure taken by a major tech company, especially one that serves advertising to more than 1.7 billion monthly users globally.

Last month, the social network posted over $6 billion in advertising revenue in the second quarter.
