Bipartisanship In Public? Dem Senator And GOP Congressman Talk Feminism In South Jersey

MOUNT LAUREL, NJ (CBS) -- File this one under: something you don't see every day.

In these days of bitter political partisanship, it's rare to see Republicans and Democrats sharing the same platform. But that was the case at one event in Burlington County.

Democrat Senator Cory Booker continues his week-long tour across New Jersey, joining Republican Congressman Tom MacArthur speaking to a group of politically active girls in Mount Laurel. They met with a dozen teenagers who are members of the Girls Advisory Council.

They discussed feminism in general at the Alice Paul Institute, inside the home of the late suffragist who fought for a woman's right to vote.

Talk to the two men, and they'll tell you joint events like this are no big deal. MacArthur, for one, likes to recall his introduction to congressional life.

"The very first week I went to Congress I entered on the Democratic side of the floor and sat down. Somebody came and said"You're on the wrong side"", MacArthur told KYW Newsradio."And I've entered that side of the floor every day since I've been in congress."

Booker, in turn, noted how both men have teamed up to get a number of bills through."If you're from New Jersey, Jersey folks at the end of the day, they want their team that theysend down to Washington to work together for vital New Jersey issues,"Booker said.

He stressed that, in fact, nothing really gets done without bipartisanship. Even if it's not always evident in public.
