'Out Of The Darkness' Walk Aims To Raise Suicide Awareness

by Mike Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Nearly every American has been affected or knows someone who has been affected by suicide.

A walk in South Jersey aims to raise awareness while also helping people cope with loss.

Each step forward is a step toward healing for those who lost loved ones to suicide. Organizer Stacy Collins is here because her son is not.

"It was very hard for me, it was hard trying to figure out who, what, when, where, how, and why. I can move forward. It was hard on my family," she said.

Collins lost her son when he was just 15-years-old.

"Just be a little kinder and a little nicer because you never know what someone's going through. A smile to a person that's struggling may be the very reason to keep on fighting," said Collins.

Twanda Price and her family came to be surrounded by others who understand their struggle.

"On August 10th, 2015, we lost a family member, Ashley Riggs. She lost her life to suicide at 22-years-old," said Price. "It's something that we just don't discuss enough as a community. There are not enough outlets here for young people when they're sad and need someone to speak to, and that is why we need to raise awareness."

The "Out of the Darkness" walk began with just 10 people several years ago. This year there were hundreds to share in the healing.
