Phone, Phone In Your Hand, Who's The Fastest Mobile Network In The Land?

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - One mobile network has sped far ahead of others in Philadelphia, according to a new report.

T-Mobile notches an average 4G speed in the city of nearly 22.5 Megabits per second. Over the next-fastest network here, AT&T, that would save you about second when downloading a song but 10 minutes for a movie.

"In Philadelphia, T-Mobile has put up very impressive speeds there. Higher than its national average, and it's got a pretty strong lead there."

Brendan Gill is CEO of OpenSignal, which crowdsources data on mobile network performance in the real world. Why might T-Mobile be tops?

"They've invested heavily. They've had a lot of this 700 MHz spectrum they've picked up. They have rolled out this additional spectrum in Philadelphia."

He tells KYW Newsradio (via Skype) that Verizon, which ranks third-fastest in Philly, edges out T-Mobile when it comes to availability of 4G.

Nationally, the company found T-Mobile averaging 16.3 Mbps in LTE speeds, with Verizon just behind at 15.9 Mbps.

OpenSignal sampled billions of measurements from 120,000 people across the US for this report. Your phone can be part of the next survey; search 'OpenSignal' in the app store.
