Move Over Fingerprint, Your Eye Is The Key To Samsung's Newest Phone

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Using your fingerprint to unlock your phone is so last year. With Samsung's latest device, the 'eyes' have it.

Your iris provides the password for the Note 7, says Samsung's Justin Denison.

"We developed our own proprietary algorithm to map the contours of your iris and the pattern of it to map the contours of your iris and translate it into a unique digital signature."

The fingerprint reader is still there, in case your glasses or contacts present a problem for the infrared scanner.

The Note 7, which hits shelves on August 19th, should be OK if dropped in the sink -- or worse.

"It can survive in 5 feet of water for up to 30 minutes."

Its 5.7" curved glass screen makes it a smidge larger than the biggest iPhone, the 6S Plus.

The Note 7 uses a new USB connector, the Type-C, for data and power connections. Denison took aim at Apple over its non-standard lightning connector, along with rumors the next iPhone will do away with the port to plug in headphones.

"Don't worry. We aren't going to move to a next-generation connector and leave you behind. Every Note 7 will come with an adapter that's compatible with earlier Galaxy accessories at no additional cost. Want to know what else it comes with? An audio jack. (crowd laughs) I'm just sayin'."

The Note 7 has 64 GB of base memory and includes a micro SD card slot for further expansion. Samsung says it has slimmed down the tip of its included input device, the S Pen, to make drawing and painting more precise.
