Large Scale Replica Of An American Revolution Ship Is Under Construction In Old City

OLD CITY, PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A large scale replica of a privateer ship is being made for an exhibit at the Museum of the American Revolution, which is under construction in Old City.

The forward section of a revolutionary war era sloop is being built by and at Philadelphia's Seaport Museum for the Museum of the American Revolution, which is scheduled to open in April of next year.

The privateer ship replica measures 19 feet by 45 feet and is made up of more than 1000 pieces, that is not even including screws and bolts.

Mark Donahue is the director of Workshop on the Water, he says it is kind of like putting a puzzle together.

"We are building it as a kit, so we are building it here. We are going to start labeling," he said. "Because we are labeling each part, so when we bring it up there we will know where it goes."

Michael Quinn is the President and CEO of the Museum of the American Revolution, he said its all about the history.

"So when you go on board on this ship you will really be in a historic environment and you will meet people like a 14-year-old James Forten, who is a young African American, a free African American living here in Philadelphia who volunteered on board privateer just inspired the cause of Liberty and equality," he said.

Privateers were privately owned vessels licensed by Congress or the state governments to attack British ships and disrupt trade.
