New Traffic Laws To Take Effect In Pa

HARRISBURG (CBS) -- Several new traffic laws are taking effect in Pennsylvania in the coming months… including one that may be causing some confusion.

There have been reports of a new Pennsylvania law allowing people to drive through red lights that are malfunctioning after waiting a reasonable amount of time.

There is such a law but it's not new. What is new is language expanding the definition of a malfunctioning traffic light to include those that use some sensors that House Republican Stephen Bloom said sometimes just don't detect smaller vehicles.

"It's strictly been with motorcycles, very tiny cars, and Amish buggies," Stephen Bloom said.

Bloom's language was folded into a new law that takes effect in September that also extends the red light camera program into 2027.

Another law taking effect in August will require infants under the age of two to be secured in a rear-facing safety seat, which is to be used until the child outgrows the weight and height limits specified by the manufacturer.
