Veteran Protester Looks Back On DNC
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - With the DNC in the rear view mirror, a local college professor studying the rhetoric of social protest weighs in on demonstrations during the past week.
Billie Murray is an assistant communications professor at Villanova University who spent a lot of time "in the trenches" during DNC week.
She says one of the things she noticed was the diversity of groups demonstrating passionately for their cause:
"Bernie supporters, Hillary supporters that were inside and outside of the DNC, the Coalition for Real Justice, Black Lives Matter, you had LGBTQ groups, just a huge diversity of people, environmental activists."
And she says the dynamic between protesters and police was easy and mostly relaxed:
"There was a pretty good balance between protecting free speech and allowing that speech to be expressed."
Murray says although Clinton won the nomination, Sanders supporters should be proud that they influenced the conversation in a significant way.
